On today’s menu: The unexpected health benefits of a simple, ancient practice.
The Body
We, as people, can be f*****g dumb.
The proof?
Social media.
Not in and of itself, per se.
It’s vapid and mind numbing, sure.
But what best accentuates our intellectual short comings is the trends that often emerge there. Particularly where health and wellness are concerned.
People will see, try and believe some pretty ridiculous s***.
Ironically, though dumb, people aren’t stupid.
If something doesn’t work, it doesn’t last. It will disappear from the cultural zeitgeist. Slowly? Perhaps. And not without debate. But eventually.
The opposite is also true:
Things of value persist.
Meditation. Breathing practices. Yoga. These things have stood the test of time for thousands of years because they have an inherent value. Even if they weren’t always fully understood.
And there’s another of these ‘trends’ that currently dominates nearly every corner of the internet:
Journalling.
Journalling has been a practice for millennia. And it’s making a comeback. Every online personality seems to be spruiking it.
But why? What’s the benefit?
Interestingly, a 1986 study conducted at the university of Texas in Austin seems to provide an unexpected insight.
It found that students who were ask to “[write] about their deepest thoughts and feelings about traumas improved their mood [which] resulted in a more optimistic attitude and better psychical health.”
In particular, the research highlighted improved immune function, including improved function of T lymphocytes (A.K.A natural killer cells, which play a role in killing cancer).
These improved health markers were still evident up to six weeks later.
The best part?
All of this was off the back of only four 15 minute writing sessions.
Basically, trading 15 minutes of your day, to write about either stressful events or your personal traumas, seems to have the potential to improve your physical health, especially immune function.
You’d almost be f******g dumb not make that trade, wouldn't you?

I don't journal. Tried it but couldn't consistently do it. But writing ideas from my Substack and publishing them helps immensely in a similar vein.
